A group of leading South African commercial timber farmers has set up an exciting forestry project in central Mozambique focusing on establishing hardwood plantations and developing a timber exporting facility at the port of Beira. They have two operating companies under their banner being Mozambique Fibra and Investimento Florestal de Mozambique (IFM).
IFM is developing and managing sustainable forest plantations in Central Mozambique aimed at ensuring restoration of highly degraded lands in a manner that supports the Mozambique government’s strategic plans and provides rural employment and benefits to local communities. Mozambique Fibra is a company looking at developing local processing and export opportunities for eucalyptus plantation products from Mozambique that meet global ethical standards for forest product trading while ensuring that benefits from processing remain in Mozambique.
Forestry Solutions Africa started working with Mozambique Tree Farming in 2018 conducting a 2nd party verification of forest inventories in Eastern Zimbabwe and Central Mozambique. This was followed by undertaking an Extended Company Risk Assessment of their forest supply areas in 2019 to enable them to supply a trial eucalyptus timber shipment to Sappi in South Africa. In 2020 Extended Company Risk Assessments were undertaken for their Mozambique Fibra company for two plantation supply areas in Central Mozambique and work was done to set up Chain of Custody managements systems for Mozambique Fibra.
