Coega Biomass Centre (PTY) LTD

A new group of investors has taken over the Coega Biomass Centre (PTY) LTD in Port Elizabeth in South Africa and set up another company Pellet Tech Africa (PTY) LTD to handle biomass in the Eastern Cape area for onward processing and export.  As part of this group of companies they have also contracted Biologistics Africa (PTY) LTD to set up and run a Group Scheme for local land owners to remove alien invasive exotics from their land and restore these areas back to more natural ecosystems.

Biologistics Africa will ensure that all the invasive removal and follow up restoration activities are conducted in a responsible manner that meets the requirements of international certification standards like FSC™.  The removal of the invasives will also provide landowners with an income, covering the costs of legal compliance with biodiversity legislation in South Africa while also providing revenue to cover the costs of restoration back to more natural ecosystems.

The feedstock from these alien invasives will be used to provide input material to enable the Coega Biomass Centre to restart operations and provide significant employment in the area.

The long term objective of the project is to help clear alien invasives at a landscape level within the Eastern Cape Province helping to alleviate some of the water stress in the region while also ensuring a return of more natural ecosystems that will enable land owners to utilise the natural assets on their land for either farming or conservation and ecotourism. This will not only improve the economic viability of their land, but also provide much needed employment in the district.  Further to this the return of more natural ecosystems will also facilitate a return and protection of some critical ecosystems, habitat and biodiversity in the region.
